‘Turon’ is a mask representing the head of the wild bull (Polish ‘tur’), embodying the dark forces of nature. In the first weeks of the year boys in funny disguises roam the neighbourhood with it, romping and bantering.
This gorgeous leather waistcoat is from Montana, USA, and was acquired in 1925.
These two amazingly bizarre masks are from Manaus, Brazil. They are made from tortoise shells, which have been decorated with lots of other animal remains including bones, teeth, and even an armadillo tail!
